When is too much, TOO much?

Saturday Potpurri

No time for love Dr.Jones
I realized something awful this morning. Something mind-blowingly awful that has seriously floored me in it's obscenity. Allow me to show you something:
GW Retail site: Canada
Above is a screen cap (edited to make it smaller... no need to paste up a 1920x1080p web page) from the Games Workshop Canada web store.

Forge World
Above this is a screen cap (again edited so as not to put up a big damn picture) from the Forge World website.

Do you notice anything? Anything... oddly similar?

If you answered the prices, you win a cookie (Note: I will not buy you a cookie. Sorry.. but feel free to treat yourself to one, you deserve it!).

5 plastic Games Workshop Assault Marines or Blood Angels Death Company squad with all attendant pieces to make those marines... $55.00 CAD (that's Canadian Dollars.)
1 Finecast Character for $28.00 CAD.
VS.
5 Resin Forge World Assault Marines with all attendant pieces to make those marines.... 32.00 British Pounds.
2 Resin characters for 25.00 British Pounds.

I know you are sitting there saying to yourself "Yeah Bean.... we can read just fine... so?"

Let me do the math for you:
That works out to $51.02 and $39.86 CAD (or $19.93 ea.) for the characters...
Meaning it is officially  THE SAME PRICE TO BUY FORGE WORLD MODELS AS IT IS TO BUY GAMES WORKSHOP MODELS. This is taking into effect the idea that characters will cost you a couple of dollars more but the squads will save you a couple of dollars.

AUUUUUUUUUGGGGGHHH!!!!
Forge world was established to bring high quality master level models to serious players at a premium price that, initially was WAAAAAY out of the price range of the casual gamer. But now the premium quality, superior uber models are now the same price as the regular plastic range of models from the parent company GW.

There is something seriously wrong with this picture.
SERIOUSLY.
WRONG.

There goes my idea of starting an Aztec themed Space Marine army. It's now going to cost me the same amount , with significantly less work, to just buy and paint a Pre-heresy World Eaters army for 6th edition.
GW just doesn't listen sometimes...
Good job Games workshop. Good job.

  1. I know, it's just plain rediculous. I bought the two Tomb King Herald guys in metal for 22 dollars. Last year. Now Theyre the same models, plus extended assembly and fixing manufactureing f'ups for 60 bucks.

    1. It really is just aweful.
This is above and beyond the usual hate garnered By GW from their yearly price hike. They've hit a turning point now. To be honest it's going to be interesting to see what this actually does to their sales now that their plastic and finecast models are directly in competition with their own "ultra premium" brand.

  2. Locals complain about my habit of buying FW rather than GW. At the time, it was to save time(which I'm short of) by spending money to reduce my hobby time investment. As of lates, I've been saving money too! lol

GW management really haven't been doing that great a job of managing their own pricing schemes IMO. They see potential to charge more for their wares, and simply do instead of stopping to think about its effects. Long run, I think they're more likely to force FW to jack up their prices as well. At least until the hobby community realizes what the outcasts have been saying the past 4-5 years. If you don't like GW's policies, stop buying from them. Should the community commit fullstop, or at least cut down their buying from GW by at least 60-70%, it won't take long for GW to rethink their pricing policies. As it stands, they're like a dealer selling to a bunch of junkies.

    1. Unfortunately the community will NOT stop buying their products (as we all know), so the chances of GW actually lowering their prices is incredibly slim. Until that does happen (aka when GW prices hit an equality or overbalance in their costs [They stop making money and start incurring costs on their products due to not enough people buying their product due to price vs their high costs requiring less people to buy models and still make a profit]) we'll be stuck with an ever increasing yearly price hike on their models.
Luckily i'm in secret love (ok... lust) with their pre-heresy stuff so this works out just fine for me.

if you think about it, GW were actually successful with their finecast...
they changed to finecast/resin to save themselves money and hike costs to the customer.
well it worked.. just not for the finecast, since i forsee a rush of people switching to Forgeworld resin.
      hahahah

    3. Ain't that always the way.
I'm hoping to get those books so I can do a review on the blog. Just need to get the money together first...
