Themed Allies in 40k

Thursday Theories

Food for thought...

As I'm sure many of you out there have noticed Allies in 6th edition are changing the game in new and mostly wonderful ways. Naturally some people out there are using these rules to power-game the system, using them to shore up the perceived in-built weaknesses of their army codeci and create the ubermenchen of army lists, but others out there (such as yours truly)see nothing but awesome conversion and themed army potential.
Now it's easy to take Blood Angels and Necrons and create a Space marine and Adeptus Mechanicus list... But what about the potential involved in that new sweet spot of the game at 2000 points? That most excellent area that allows not only an additional Force Org Chart.. but also that (seemingly lost to the void of the internet, amongst all the angst and hate) awesome SECOND ALLIES DETACHMENT?
Oh yeah.... that exists.. and it's pure friggin gold.

Behold! 1000 points of Allies for a 2000 Points + Space Marine List!

I dub thee: Inquisitorial sticky fingers or How the Radical stopped worrying and learned to love the Arbites.

40 pts
So whats the story behind this list?
Well the Inquisitor is a Radical that's using his ill-gotten chaos powers for good (for the time being at least) and the assassin is under his employ. The situation has become too great for him and his planetary allies to handle (the Arbites/Guard list) and he's requested the assistance of a nearby Space Marine Chapter (or whatever your main list is... Space Marines are what I'm basing my list off).  In addition, he's requested a Grey Knight team to deal with a potential Chaos puppet master pulling the strings of whatever the threat is.
The Guard list represents the local Arbites Station sending a Pre-cog detective (the Primaris) and a purge-squad to support the Inquisitor. The Ratlings are a support team sent by the PDF or perhaps a local group of guerilla/freedom fighters aiding the cause from the shadows, and the Penal Legion team represents the Inquisitor emptying the Arbites Precincts cells of the dregs to use as fodder for the upcomming battle.

So there you have it, my 1000 point (ok, 982 point...) themed allies detachment list.  Add this to a 1000 (1018 pnt?) point Space Marine list and you'll have a solid story for your themed list. Plus you have to admit, this would be awesome to build, convert and paint. In fact, I think I'll do just that!

Until next time,
The Story makes the List!
Bean out~

  1. Unfortunately...in the standard rules if you're in double detachment land and take two allied detachments, both have to be from the same codex - so OK to take two allied IG detachments, but not IG + GK for example.

Of course it's a simple thing to houserule with your locals.

From a practical standpoint, I would be worried that the 1000pt base SM list, having to cram 2 HQ and 4 troops in to cover the 2 FOC requirements in order to get 2 allied detachments would be pretty bland.

However...a 1000pt SM list with a couple easily swappable 500pt allied add-ons for 1500pt games wouldn't be shabby either.

  2. Ahh yeah I took it as a given that this was aimed at friendly games. This is in no way optimized at all for tournament play.

Truth be told I don't own the rule book atm (I've been waiting for the mini-rulebook) so I've been operating purely off of memory until I get my grubby hands on the real thing. Where-as Richard focuses more on actual playable lists and legit win-a-bility, I always focus on beerhammer games. I long ago gave up my tournament play-style, as I find much more fun playing with "crappy" lists to favor the units I like, such as Land-speeder storms or anything else I want to paint. If only those damn Storm-Talons I ordered would show up......
Besides, there's something to be said to proving that the "Internet approved" Units aren't the be-all-end-all of playable units in codecii (codexes? Codii? whatever..).

Mayhaps I should add a disclaimer to my "theme-Lists"?
